Violin is a musical instrument that gives us the greatest opportunity to perform some of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. At the same time, the musical abilities that violin offers makes it one of the most technically advanced acoustic instruments with having close to no limitation. On violin, it is practically possible to perform almost any kind of music and develop an amazing technique together with a remarkably beautiful sound. There are also many and very interesting benefits that playing the violin can bring to us; things that even beginners notice wright away at the beginning of their trip to the great world of music.

Playing a violin can physically benefit us:
  • Posture is the first thing to learn when starting any instrument.  If the posture is not correct, it will make it very hard to practice for longer period of time. Having the right posture when playing the violin will also help you create the habit of sitting up straight and tall. Your back and shoulders may become stronger over time and able to support your upper body with better position.
  • Stronger arms:  At the beginning, playing the violin can make you feel very tired, just like every other physical exercise. With time your arm muscles and upper body will become stronger and you will build an endurance.
  • Better motor skills and synchronization: It is amazing how many things we do at the same time while playing the violin. We play the violin while coordinating both our fingers and our arms in a complete synchrony. The different movements of the bow in our right hand should match the exact moment the left hand presses or releases a string. That itself increases our coordination and motor skills tremendously.
  • Finger flexibility: Playing more difficult songs on the violin puts the left hand fingers in a various difficult positions while the right hand controls the bow strokes. That takes a great precision and can also cause tension in your fingers. Over time, the tension disappears as your fingers become more flexible.
Violin makes us smarter:
  • Improved reading/auditory skills and concentration: There are multiple studies about the connection between a child’s musical training and their word interpreting skills. Music lessons train the auditory abilities that are essential part of learning to pronounce the words correctly.
On the other hand, reading violin music requires a great deal of concentration. In order to interpret the notes on a piece of paper into beautiful sounds, you must remain extremely focused.
  • Greater persistence:  In order to improve, a violin student needs to be self-disciplined and has to complete long practice hours.  Being fully aware of that helps us learn perseverance! After hard work and many hours of playing, we get to appreciate the great results and enjoy the beautiful music that we created ourselves. Most importantly, everybody else get to enjoy our hard work by simply listening to our music.
  • Memory: It is incredible how much a human brain can remember! One of the best way to test it is playing the violin! Together with the muscle memory we gain as we become more proficient at playing violin, we memorize musical pieces, techniques, strokes, rhythms and dynamics which makes us able to play without sheet music.
  • Helps us deal with stress: Practicing violin is not easy but can be very rewarding. In a stressful day, coming home and having the opportunity to have your mind engaged with this amazing musical instrument brings you in a different world, away from daily problems and helps you to forget about stress.
Trough violin, we bond more with our family and friends and meet new people:
  • Performing in front of people: No matter playing in orchestra or taking private lessons, we always have concerts and recitals.  We invite our family and friends to support us and enjoy our music. Performing with other people leads to many new friendships and teaches us to work together in a group.
  • Self-confidence: The excitement and the high level of adrenalin during playing in front of people can’t be compare to anything else. That brings us way outside of our comfort zone and gives us the ability to overcome our fears and better our self-confidence even in other areas. Giving speeches in class or taking the initiative at work will become much easier.
  • Ability to work together as a group: The highest form of communication with other people is playing together with different instruments in an ensemble or an orchestra. That can teach us to be extremely precise with our work and yet being very focused about everybody else’s parts. Having together goal with a group of people puts our own personality step back and teaches us how to be collaborative.
